Ketchup is a product that the entire world loves. Millions of people can’t imagine a life without this tomato sauce, which fits in perfectly as a condiment in many dishes and perfectly highlights their taste. In addition to that, ketchup is healthy because it contains a lot of lycopene, a natural antioxidant.

All ketchups are not made equal. So how can we tell if the one that we’re buying is high quality? Maybe based on its thickness? Or on its intense red color? No, because one of the ways of making sure that the ketchup we eat is healthy, is to study its ingredients in detail.

Accuracy is key here, because manufacturers often try to hide their little sins, taking advantage of customers who don’t pay attention. That’s what Heinz did, a company that produces one of the world’s most famous ketchups. Fortunately, dieticians and doctors noticed that Heinz was making their patiens into balloons.

What ingredients compose the ketchup that is sold in stores? In general, these tomato sauces are produced using tomato concentrate, corn syrup, vinegar and spices, for example, dried peppers or powdered onions. Of course, the most important part is the percentage of tomato concentrate since the higher it is, the healthier the ketchup will be.

Heinz sells nearly 2 million ketchup bottles a day. Many people praise its taste thinking that it’s based on the large quantity of good quality tomatoes used, as evidenced by the product’s list of ingredients, which lists out the following: tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, corn syrup high in fructose, corn syrup, onion powder, salt, spices, natural aroma.

At first glance the ketchup’s list of ingredients seems to be ok, but it’s worth it to turn your attention to the corn syrup. Why was it listed twice with a specific emphasis on its sugar content? In general, there are two reasons for this.

First, this was done because regular corn syrup appears to seem healthier than corn syrup with an increased amount of fructose. Consumers are avoiding sugar-rich products more and more often, so the presence of syrup with fructose alone could discourage them from buying ketchup, which is why they also write in plain corn syrup (in reality, there is virtually no difference between the two syrups).

The second reason for this sort of ingredient list for ketchup was the desire to hide the fact that it contains few tomatoes! Producers are required to write the ingredients on the package in the order that corresponds to the amount found in the product (going from the ingredient that makes up the most of the product to the ingredient that is present only in trace amounts).

At the moment, tomatoes are in first place in the ingredient list for Heinz ketchup, but if corn syrup were not unnecessarily split up into two types, it would be the sauce’s main ingredient! It’s a clear scam from the standpoint of the customers, who are convinced that they’re buying a sauce made mainly from tomatoes, when really it’s made from corn.

Corn syrup, which makes use of many conservatives in its production, is mostly made of genetically modified plants. Consuming GMO products increases your risk of cancer, and many medics believe that it’s this genetic modification of food that has caused so many people to develop cancer.

In addition, genetically modified foods affect fertility, kidney and liver functions. Therefore, it’s better to avoid products containing GMOs, and Heinz ketchup along with that, which is filled more than halfway with genetically modified corn. Israeli authorities didn’t miss this fact, since they banned calling the Heinz tomato sauce, ketchup, because it doesn’t the standard percentage of tomato content – there just isn’t enough.

It’s important to carefully read labels, because our health depends on it. It’s best to buy products with the shortest possible ingredient list, even if they’re more expensive, because it’s worth it to shell out for your health.
